Makaira conducted a public affairs campaign to promote electric kickboards in Japan.
Specifically, in addition to establishing an industry association of micro-mobility operators, Makaira worked with transportation infrastructure-related companies such as railroad companies, bus companies, developers, and real estate companies to promote discussions on integrating electric kickboards with public transportation. We also collaborated with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the National Police Agency, and local governments to collect data to verify the safety of electric kickboards through demonstration tests and other means, and to hold discussions to formulate policies based on this data, thereby contributing to policy formation toward the revision of the Road Traffic Law.
Even after the revision of the Road Traffic Law in 2023, the promotion of electric kickboards and safety awareness through public-private partnerships continues: In April 2023, the Micro Mobility Promotion Council and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government signed a partnership agreement to strengthen their activities to inform the public of traffic rules. Through videos and web pages explaining traffic rules, users are informed of correct usage and safety rules.
In addition, the Public-Private Council for the Safe Use of Personal Mobility, established in cooperation with the National Police Agency, has been implementing safety education measures, such as requiring users of electric kickboards to take a traffic rule test and answer all questions correctly.
These activities have been recognized by The Gold Standard Award for Public/Private Partnership.
In its public affairs activities to promote the use of electric kickboards in Japan, Makaira has been working diligently to ensure that dialogue with various stakeholders in the public and private sectors is carefully conducted based on data from numerous demonstration experiments, and that consensus building is promoted. As a result of these careful dialogues and consensus building, the Road Traffic Law was revised and enforced, leading to the social implementation of the electric kickboard. We are honored to have received The Gold Standard Award for Public/Private Partnership in recognition of this series of processes.
We will continue our efforts to improve the environment and raise awareness so that various users can coexist and use the “public space” called roads safely and comfortably.
